Firstly let me introduce myself, this is Sunil Thakur here, writing Backstage Cafe's first blog. Born & brought up in Bombay, stayed in US for 5 years & now back for good to Aamchi Mumbai.
Two things I tell everyone is ...
- The only thing that changes in my life, no matter where & with whom I live is, the brand of my Cigarettes & Alcohol
- Mumbai is a City where you can get anything for dirt cheap & get the same thing for ridiculously expensive prices
Anyways, I am an avid fan of Classic Rock or Rock N' Roll in general & I love going out on weekends, either to see a Live Band or a place which plays good music, preferably Rock N' Roll music. But frankly, I can count the number of places I feel like going to, in Mumbai, on my fingers.
I hate 90% of Pubs, never go to Clubs, don't know what the hell Lounge Bars are & don't know why the hell one would sit in a Coffee Shop. I feel the best & most economical way to spend a weekend in Mumbai, is to sit in a Quarter Bar, cheap booze & awesome food.
But I miss listening to Music & head banging to Live Music. I am sick & tired thinking what to do on a weekend & bored to death doing the same old mundane things every weekend ..
- All bloody Gigs happen on weekdays
- There is no place which plays decent Classic Rock on weekends
- All stand up comedy acts organized are in bloody auditoriums where you cant drink & smoke
- Movie theaters charge a bomb
- I hate going to Malls which are crowded as hell
- Hate coffee places, I swear why the hell will I pay Rs 150 for a damn coffee, when I can have a better one on the road
- Sick and tired of pretentious places like Firangi Paani, Poptates, Irish Pub, Happy Singh & many more ...
- Cant afford Hard Rock, Blue Frog, Tavern & now even Toto's
- Meeting at cheap Quarter Bars always rages a debate cause no one wants to travel much far from their place
- Having house parties is not possible cause everyone stays with their parents or due to society issues
- Don't want to travel outside Mumbai just to have a drinking session & play cards
- Don't even start on the Gay trips to Resorts, where men ogle at few girls with their salwar kurta's in water
- Don't want to stay home and watch Sports alone
- Don't want to keep calling stupid rental stores, cause they never have the movie I wanna watch, all they have are Acccction (with a Gujju slang) movies
- Don't wanna take out by bike to drive down to the nearest Katta (hang out place) or have some stupid 1 KM race to impress some dumb society girls
- In short I wanna get away from the Same Old Same Old shit
Fuck all this ! Fuck commercialization ! Fuck recession ! Fuck society norms ! Fuck you all !
I just want to have 'Nothing but a Good Time'. After spending 5 days doing a job I don't even like, just to pay the bills, I wanna have fun on the weekends & fun in the way I want, without overspending ofcourse.
Opening up my own place needs huge investment & believe me every second person in Mumbai wants to start a Sports Bar/Lounge Bar/Restaurant/Pub/ Club, but having a Family business of Dance Bars/ now Orchestra Bars, I know it ain't that easy.
But then a friend of mine, Clarence Lowden came up to me with this idea of an Event Group or Virtual Cafe called 'Backstage Cafe' which will organize various events like Musical Gigs, Movie Screenings, Stand Up Comedy, Sports Screenings, Bike Trips, Adventure Trips & many more such events.
Hopefully through 'Backstage Cafe' I not only will be able to have fun myself, but also give a lot of other frustrated people like me, something fun to do on the weekends.
